Lawley and Overdale Parish Council

BLOG

Here you can find out what we have done and what we are doing.

We continue to work in partnership with Telford & Wrekin Council and other agencies to improve our local environment.  Below are some examples of what we have achieved though partnership working.

BUS SHELTERS

Since 2005 we have removed one bus shelter which had been severely vandalised, replaced seven shabby bus shelters and installed a new one.  All these shelters have been fitted with anti vandal panels to help deter budding graffiti artists.

Many of these selthers house notice boards and have useful information attached, such a list of contact details for the Clerk and councillors.

LITTER

When we carried out a consultation in 2004 it revealed dog fouling and litter as one of the major issues.  In order to address this we have installed dog fouling signs and new litter bins throughout the parish, particularly in areas frequented by children e.g. safe routes to school and open spaces.  These bins can be used for both ordinary litter and dog litter.

FLOWERS

We have planted daffodil bulbs at various locations which flower each spring.  Areas included are Cedar Close, Rock Road, Marlborough Way, Old Park and Lawley Village.

STREET LIGHTING

We have also provided additional street lighting at Cedar Close, and Dawley Bank.

We monitor street lights within the parish and ensure that they are functioning as they should be and report any faults to Telford & Wrekin Council.

If you see a faulty light please contact the Clerk to the Council, preferably with the street light number and or its location, so that it can be identified for repair by the engineers.

CRIME AND DISORDER

As part of our duty to comply with section 17 of the Crime and Disorder Act we fund our own Community Support Officer (CSO).   Our CSO engages with local residents by patrolling the parish and this makes our local community feel safer and improves their quality of life.  Our CSO is able to issue fixed penalty notices for dog fouling, parking offences, fly tipping, graffiti as well as dealing with anti social behaviour.  However, before a fixed penalty notice can be issued the CSO must witness the offence.

Revenue from fixed penalty notices issued by CSOs does not go back to the Treasury but is retained by Telford & Wrekin Council.

We are now holding monthly Police Surgeries at the Carpenter Centre, Overdale on the first Wednesday of each month.

PACT meeting are held in the parish each month and alternate between the Carpenter Centre and Dawley Baptist Church.

COMMUNITY FACILITIES

We manage 2 community buildings, Lawley Community Centre in Lawley and the Carpenter Centre in Overdale.  Both of these buildings are available for hire and are regularly used to provide child care, educational and recreational activities.

The lease on Lawley Community Centre has recently expired and we have just negotiated a new 3 year lease with Telford & Wrekin Council which will run until 2012.

If you would like to hire either of these venues please contact the Clerk to the Council.

PLAY PROVISION

We have recently carried out a consultation with children in the Overdale area and we are actively working with Telford & Wrekin Council to help provide new play equipment throughout the parish.  A planning application to upgrade facilities at Lawley Playing Field was approved in October 2009.

NEW DEVELOPMENT

Lawley is earmarked for major development that will see 3,300 new dwellings built over the next 15 to 20 years.  We attend regular meetings with Telford & Wrekin Council and the Lawley Developer Group who keep us up to date with development proposals and housing sales.

VILLAGE GREENS

We have submitted two village green applications, one for Lawley Village Green and one for Lawley Playing field.

We have now been informed that Telford & Wrekin Council, the land owner, has agreed to formally register both pieces of land as a village green.

CHRISTMAS TREE

We have recently planted a Korean Fir tree on Lawley Village Green for the enjoyment of our local community.  The tree was decked with solar fairy lights during the 2009 Christmas period.  Unfortunately, one set of solar lights was vandalised and these will have to be replaced.

We have dedicated the tree to the late Cllr. Pauline Picken, who was Chair of the parish council from 2004 until 2009.

COMMUNITY LED PLAN

We are soon to carry out a community led plan and we shall be seeking the views of our local residents.  Watch out for news on this.
